David prayed, “Teach me to number my days, that I may apply my heart to wisdom.” Ps. 90:12
Someone said that our days are like identical luggage, but some are able to pack more than others into theirs.
We all get 24 hours. You can’t manage it, control it, slow it down or speed it up. It marches on incessantly, hour by hour, minute by minute, our “life seconds numbering tick tock, tick tock”. People are always trying to find time, but let me save you the trouble, there is no more to find. Twenty-four hours is all there is or ever will be.
There is one thing we can do with time however: waste it. Benjamin Franklin said, “Don’t waste your time, it is the stuff that life is made of.” Jesus said things like, “Take no thought for tomorrow, sufficient for today is the evil thereof.” “Seek first the Kingdom of God, and everything else will be added to you.”
Therefore, David asked for wisdom for his use of time. The wise can fit more in their luggage because they know what to pack. The wise understand how precious a commodity time is and make the most of the time they have been given. Clinical Psychologist Charles Spezzano says that “We do not pay for things with money but with time.” Therefore, he suggests, when you make a purchase, think of the cost in terms of the time it takes to pay for it. Then ask, was worth it?
The most valuable thing we can ever have is a relationship with Christ. Let me suggest setting time aside each day to work on that relationship. Give it some time, a few weeks, a month. Then look back at the time you spent in His presence and evaluate for yourself, “Was it worth it?”
